The Detroit News is reporting Wednesday that the Detroit school board has set in motion a process to rename several buildings in the school district, including the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine.

Normally when we do these stories, the schools have names associated with Confederate generals, but at least one board member is pushing to have the Housing and Urban Development secretary’s name removed because he’s associated with the Trump administration:
LaMar Lemmons cited the neurosurgeon’s name being added when the district was under an emergency financial manager, saying some residents objected to Carson representing the city.
Residents “don’t support the (Trump) administration,” he said.
What is this new policy? One criterion for changing a building’s name is if “information newly discovered about the current name of the school is negative in nature.” If that’s not the reason the board is citing, we can’t find the one that applies.
Trying to imagine how this would play out in the media if an enormously successful black liberal was having his name removed from schools. But hey, Carson went Republican so he’s fair game now. Get him! https://t.co/YsJgRHLAIU

I’ve criticized Ben Carson a great deal, and I’m not a fan. But this move by the school board is graceless, obnoxious and disrespectful to Carson’s honorable achievements before entering politics. https://t.co/SkWWnEmkDL

Detroit schools are garbage, they are failing and broke. But God forbid one of them be named after a successful black man who managed to go through them and become a world renown surgeon because he’s also conservative. To change that, they have money to burn. #3rdWorldPolitics https://t.co/yslDrUlxJA

Ben Carson is one of the most accomplished surgeons in American history. But, sure, why would you want to have your school of science and medicine named after him? Makes total sense. https://t.co/BFRbC3Jqz6

Just when I thought Detroit couldn’t get any worse. It doesn’t hurt Dr. Carson, but it sure hurts the kids you won’t be able buy books or pencils for after you waste money on this. And we already know you don’t give a crap about them.

Just another reason why Detroit is just awful.

Ben Carson has done nothing controversial that merits the removal of his name from the school. This incident further illustrates the utter distain and hatred of liberal blacks towards conservative blacks.

The Carson Scholars program has done more to educate poor children than any of the pieces of garbage on the Detroit school board ever could. https://t.co/yslDrUlxJA
