‘Slavery apologist’: NBC Asia expert ‘benched’ after praising Japanese occupation of Korea

NBC was forced to apologize after it’s on-air Asia expert Joshua Cooper Ramo praised Japan’s role in the transformation of South Korea. This would be the same Japan that occupied Korea from 1910-1945 and committed atrocities on Koreans as every bit as awful as the Nazis in Germany. But, whatever … he’s an expert:

From Yahoo:

Josh Cooper Ramo was supposed to be the guy who helped NBC and its viewers navigate a Winter Olympics that’s being held in an Asian country they may not be familiar with.

He instead got the network in trouble for a remark that left some Koreans outraged.

NBC apologized on Saturday after a comment Ramo made as Japan was introduced at the Opening Ceremony. Ramo introduced Japan as “a country which occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945.”

“But every Korean will tell you that Japan is a cultural and technological and economic example that has been so important to their own transformation,” he added.

Yeah, this didn’t go over:

NBC is complicit in racism by employing Joshua Cooper Ramo to praise Japan for contributing to Korea, by enslaving Koreans. Ramo is a white piece of shit and slavery apologist. #PyeongChang2018

Hey, Josh: Should we thank Japan for the transformation of Hawaii?

NBC commentator said that Korea appreciate the Japanese colonial ship.

Do you thank Japan for the Pearl Harbor raids?

Do not insult.

And this was not the only stupid thing the Asia expert said:

NBC’s Olympics Asian Analyst Joshua Cooper Ramo says having the next three Olympics in Korea, Japan and China is an “opportunity to experience all of the Asian cultures.” @NBCOlympics, maybe next time hire an Asian Analyst that knows Asia has more than three cultures???

Or even the first Olympics he’s been criticized for:

Ah, Joshua Cooper Ramo. I remember China hands sniping at him during the Beijing Games. https://t.co/Ep8J1cXM9L

NBC has now “benched” the analyst, and rightly so:

NBC has sidelined one of its Olympic analysts for saying that the Japanese occupation of the Korean peninsula was an important moment in South Korea’s economic transformation, drawing swift backlash online.

The analyst, Joshua Cooper Ramo, made the remark during NBC’s prime-time telecast of Friday’s opening ceremony in pointing out the presence of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Great move, NBC … but too late it seems:

How stupid are they @NBCOlympics? They hire a commentator that thinks Koreans are “grateful” for ANYTHING that the Japanese did to them between 1910-1945 occupation? As a K-Drama viewer even I know better than that. I’m embarrassed by the #FakeNewsMedia https://t.co/fCbOZ2r9Z7
