FBI Director Chris Wray just dropped a BOMB on the White House’s Rob Porter timeline

The White House’s narrative on the firing of staff secretary Rob Porter took a serious hit on Tuesday when FBI Director Chris Wray testified in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee that, “the FBI submitted a partial report on Rob Porter in March, completed the full report in late July, then received a request for follow-up inquiries, and provided that information in November”:

FBI Director Chris Wray says the FBI submitted a partial report on Rob Porter in March, completed the full report in late July, then received a request for follow-up inquiries, and provided that information in November.

This is not what the White House has been saying:

FBI’s Wray just gave a different timeline of the Porter background investigation than the White House has given.

According to the White House, the background check “was not completed”:

Oh, Sarah Sanders repeated this apparent lie yesterday, saying of Porter’s background check: “As I know Raj addressed last week, we let the process play out. It was ongoing, hadn’t been completed.”

Wray further testified that the White House was “well aware of Porter allegations after FBI background investigation” with the file closed in January:

Wray suggests WH was well aware of Porter allegations after FBI background investigation. Wray said there was a “partial report” in March, completed background check in July. Did follow up in November. Closed the file in January and passed along additional info this month

So per Wray, FBI background probe into Rob Porter effectively ended 3 separate times with no apparent action from White House.

Wray said that he’s “quite confident that … the FBI followed established” protocols:

FBI Director Chris Wray defended the bureau’s handling of Rob Porter clearance process. “I am quite confident that in this instance…the FBI followed established” protocols.

Wray was also asked about this tweet from the president suggesting the reputations of the FBI is in “tatters”:

After years of Comey, with the phony and dishonest Clinton investigation (and more), running the FBI, its reputation is in Tatters – worst in History! But fear not, we will bring it back to greatness.

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 3, 2017

Wray’s response:

FBI director Wray asked by @MartinHeinrich on Trump snipe about FBI reputation in “tatters”. He extols patriotism of agents, and said he has seen no sign of “inherent political bias”.

— Julian Borger (@julianborger) February 13, 2018

In response to questions from Sen. @MartinHeinrich, Director Wray says he’s seen no evidence of systemic political bias at the FBI.

Wray also questioned the accuracy of the Nunes memo:

Asked about Nunes memo, FBI Director Wray says he still has “grave concerns about the accuracy of the memorandum”

— Jamie Dupree (@jamiedupree) February 13, 2018

Wray continues to say Nunes memo left out key facts and was inaccurate – and says FBI “provided thousands of documents that were very, very sensitive ….” and it’s “hard” to distill it down to 3.5 pages

All in all, not a good day for the White House.
